CRB Enhanced Disclosure, Fitness to Teach (FtT) and ISA Registration

June 22nd, 2010

New regulations, introduced by the TDA, mean that the Consortium has to ensure that CRB Enhanced Disclosure and Fitness to Teach (FtT) checks have been carried out, before a trainee can commence the GRTP. In the past, we only had to ensure that systems were in place for CRB checks.

CRB Enhanced Disclosure

Guidance on CRB checks suggest that portability is only possible if the previous check was carried out within the previous six months and that a new check will be necessary if a candidate is “Taking up a post with significantly greater responsibility for children.” Further information on the CRB process can be found on the Criminal Records Bureau website.

Fitness to Teach

The new Fitness to Teach check is a requirement of the TDA, under the Disability Discrimination Act. The check must be carried out as the GTP is largely school based and those accepted onto the programme must meet the same fitness requirements as qualified teachers. Please also refer to the Equality of Opportunity section of this website.

ISA Registration

Please ensure you are aware of the current requirements for teachers, made by the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). Information on this process can be found at www.isa-gov.org

Applying with Checks Outstanding

The Consortium will currently accept applications which are otherwise complete, but with the CRB and/or FtT check outstanding. Any candidate in this situation will be invited to interview and given a specified time period, from receipt of their application, to allow the checks to be completed. If successful at interview, the candidate will be offered a conditional place. Candidates will not be able to start the programme unless evidence is provided that these checks have been completed.
